Known as the Jimi Hendrix of turntables, DJ Qbert is a turntablist from the San Francisco Bay Area who is widely respected for his masterful skills and his ability to use the turntable as an instrument. He began DJing competively in 1991. DJ Qbert, Mixmaster Mike and DJ Apollo became the Rock Steady Crew DJs, going on to win the 1992 Disco Mix Club (DMC) DJ World Championships together. Qbert also won that title with Mixmaster Mike in 1993 and 1994 and he has since been inducted into the DMC Hall of Fame. Qbert was one of the founding members of the Invisbl Skratch Piklz, a band that used turntables as their instruments and were asked to stop entering the DMC championships because it discouraged other people from competing. DJ Qbert released his first album in 1998, Wave Twisters, upon which an animated film was then created. That film, Wave Twisters (2001), was the first turntablism-based musical and it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, won the SXSW award for best use of music in film, and was selected at over 30 other international film festivals. Qbert also created a DJ school called the Qbert Skratch University and was recently chosen to be featured in the video game DJ Hero 2.
