Cee Lo Cancels September Cargo Date, Announces October Pacha Date

Lady Killer Cee Lo says F*ck You to Cargo gig and replaces it with Pacha date a month later.
Cee Lo Green has been forced to postpone his show at London’s Cargo which was due to happen on September 27 due to recording commitments for his highly anticipated upcoming solo album The Lady Killer. The show has been replaced by a similarly intimate one-off London date at Pacha on October 26.

Featuring a full live band, the show is sure to be the hottest ticket in town given that it represents the first chance for UK fans to hear material from The Lady Killer that will be released on November 1st. Tickets for the original Cargo show remain valid for the rearranged date at Pacha.

This will be Green’s only UK date this year before he heads back to the States where F**K YOU is shaping up to be one of the biggest hits of the year.

What It Is! Funky Soul And Rare Grooves (1967-1977) [4 Disc - Box Set]

Ninety-one (91) tracks deep and five hours long, this multi-artist, 4-CD set mines rare, renowned, legendary and little-known grooves from the vaults of Atlantic, Atco, and Warner Bros Records!

Too many reissue compilations are content to merely slice 'n' dice familiar catalog choices in not particularly original ways. But this four-disc, 91-track trove of obscure '70s R&B and funk from Warner-distributed labels, great and small, argues there's still treasure to be gleaned from studio vaults -- a five-hour groove-fest that's as interested in shaking booty as in opening ears. Even the genre's groundbreaking usual suspects (Wilson Pickett, the Bar-Kays, Curtis Mayfield, Earth, Wind & Fire, et al) are represented by selections that aren't immediately familiar, while Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin serves up a radically different, previously unreleased take of "Rock Steady."

Still other stars contribute their sonic touches to some of the lesser-known cuts, as witnessed by the patent trippiness of Sly Stone alter egos 6ix and Stanga on "I'm Just Like You" and "Little Sister," respectively. The stark, party-not-so-hearty contrast of the Mayfield-written-and-produced "Hard Times" by Baby Huey & Baby Sisters and the Meters' version of "Tampin'," released under the moniker of the Rhine Oaks.

Sequenced in rough chronological order, it's a savvy window into a musical evolution as well, with the rhythmic guitars, organ swells, and horn flourishes of traditional '60s R&B giving way to sinewy synths and increasingly chunky bass lines as the decade grooves on. While savvy hip-hoppers will note that shrewd mixers have already repurposed many of the rarities here, it's a revelation to hear them in their original form.

A compelling deconstruction of an often clichéd and too-narrowly-defined genre, this is an anthology that showcases music that has influenced such contemporary artists as Tupac, the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, and Kanye West, annotated by many of the original musicians who set the dance floor in motion.

INTERVIEW: Is There Anything Wrong with Ghost Writing in Hip Hop?

“S. Carter, ghost writer, and for the right price I can even make yo sh-t tighter.” – Jay Z
Ghost writing in hip hop is a cardinal sin…right? I mean, no one cares if Mary J. Blige or Beyonce wrote their own songs but how would you feel if you found out your favorite MC had never wrote a single line he spit? Well, regardless of how people in hip hop circles feel, more rappers are using ghost writers nowadays more then ever. So, is there anything REALLY wrong with ghost writing in hip hop? Well, I had a chance to sit down with Rap Rebirth, a ghost writing service to kick it and find out exactly how the entire ghost writing business works, check it out.

How did Rap Rebirth get started?

I’ve been a fan of hip hop my whole life. In middle school I spent days listening to the classics. I started with what was popular at time. “Blackout”, “Life and Times of Sean Carter: Vol 2″, “The Slim Shady LP”, “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot”, and “The Chronic 2001″. That was Hip Hop 101 for me. Then I graduated to “Illmatic”, “ATLiens”, “The Infamous”, “Low End Theory”, “Liquid Swords”, “Reasonable Doubt”, “Paid in Full” and other classics. I’d study the lyrics as I listened. By the time I hit high school I was an expert in rap. I could quote almost any lyric and tell you every album in an artist’s catalog. I was bumping so much music that writing came naturally. I developed by imitating my favorite MCs. I’d write verses as Nas, Slick Rick, Rakim, and Jay-Z. Incidentally this was great practice for ghostwriting.

In college I was writing lyrics at a high level. I started sharing them and got a lot of positive feedback. At the same time I was studying Entrepreneurship so I decided to start a ghostwriting service. Putting together my love of hip hop and love of business made sense. And ghostwriting was attractive because I could do it on the side and do it
anywhere. Of course I tried to land the big artists at first. I’d send out lyrics and make phone calls to labels. I must’ve called Diddy’s New York office a hundred times.

Then one night I was checking out a show with local acts and it hit me. There was more money to be made with a large clientele of up and coming rappers than trying to hit the lottery with a big name. I put up a website called Ethereal Scribe that would later become Rap Rebirth. I developed a marketing strategy to target developing acts that were trying to get signed. Some of it involved networking at concerts. But most of it was online through Google AdWords, Facebook, and MySpace. Client by client I built a business. Referrals were key to getting larger acts and growing.

Nowadays there seems to be more ghostwriting going on in hip hop more
then ever. What do you attribute that to?

It’s a few things. One, it’s easier to collaborate. With online social networking, virtual studios and broadband you can outsource your entire album. Often producers and rappers never meet. They trade tracks through email. The same thing happens with lyrics, only it’s even easier. Plus a lot of rappers want who use ghostwriters want to stay anonymous and the internet makes that easy. Two, it’s the decline of record sales. Labels want big hits. They want high margins. Rappers are under a lot of pressure. Hiring a ghostwriter to help make that perfect hit becomes attractive. Three, there’s been a gradual change in the perception of ghostwriting. More and more people see it as a collaboration. It used to be frowned upon now it’s encouraged.

Writing rhymes in general is a very tedious task. How are you able to
write so many rhymes while also tailor making the lyrics to a person’s
specific style? Do you have a staff of writers?

I understand writing rhymes for some people is tedious. That’s part of why we’re in business. But I love writing rhymes, for me it’s a joy. When I’m in a zone the lyrics flow easily. Of course there are lots of revisions that go
back and forth with the clients. That takes time. But overall I’m very efficient. And I’m involved with every project that comes in. That said there are trusted writers that help out during busy times and with certain projects.

When Skillz came out with “Ghostwriter” hip hop heads were in a frenzy to
find out who Skillz was talking about. Do you find that confidentiality is
very important for your clients?

There’s a live version of the first verse where he actually says the names! It’s crazy. I think Skillz is a very talented rapper and writer. I look forward to his wrap up tracks every year. And I don’t know Skillz personally or the details of the “Ghostwriter” situation. BUT. I don’t think he should have revealed the names. That’s a cardinal sin in ghostwriting.
Nothing is more important than trust. Clients need to know they can trust you. It’s more important than skills or reliability. If they think for a second you’re looking to exploit them or gain fame off their name they’ll run for the hills. Being trustworthy is good business. A reputation for confidentiality helps a ghostwriter land big clients. They’re the ones especially concerned with keeping things on the DL.

Who is your favorite MC? And how would you feel if you found out that
they had a ghostwriter their entire career?

Interesting question. Nas is my favorite MC. If I found out he had a ghostwriter since “Live at the BBQ” it’d surprise me. His music is so personal and he has such a strong reputation for being a writer. Plus he ghostwrites for artists himself. I’d be curious to know who the writer is and what their dynamic’s like. It’s funny cuz Nas toys with that idea on the track “Death Anniversary.” He says “What if Jungle wrote my shit, and I’m really illiterate – and the whole Nas catalog was just an experiment.”

What is the best way for someone to contact you if they needed your
services?

LIVE: Black Milk at Southpaw, 9-14-10

I’ve seen Black Milk several times this year, and his shows never disappoint. However, from what I’ve heard about his show this Tuesday at Southpaw, it might have been his best one yet. The Brooklyn venue was packed for his album release party. Guilty Simpson, Elzhi and Sean Price and the one and only Daru Jones added support and Talib Kweli, Pharoahe Monch, Jay Electronica were in the building. All in all, it was a great night for hip-hop.

As always, much props to All The Way Live where you can find more sets from Elzhi, Sean Price, Guilty Simpson, and Daru Jones.

Ed Sheeran recording live DVD

Ed Sheeran is having a humongous year; from hanging out with Jamie Foxx to recording with a whole host of unusual artists for a folk singer 2010 has been his year.

Next in line for Mr. Sheeran is the recording of a live EP and DVD.  For a live EP you need a gig... and this gig will take place on Sunday October 17th at The Bedford, in sunny Balham.  Tickets are a bargain at £10 (+£1 fee) and are available from WeGotTickets - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/93526.

Leddra Chapman is providing support.  The two recently performed a magical mini-set on the streets of Camden and her alone is well worth the entrance fee.
Given Ed's fast growing popularity I would recommend booking this one early as he is getting quite a following these days!

The Queens rapper will revisit the 2002 original Lost Tapes concept and will deliver a compilation of songs that didn’t make it to his albums over the past few years.

On Wednesday afternoon, MTV News got word from Nas' camp that The Lost Tapes: Vol. 2 will be released on December 14.

Nas told MTV that he is going to be giving the streets lots of music to hear over the next few months.

"I'm unloading records I want the streets to hear," the Queens rapper said in an email. "Cleaning out my hard drives. Gonna do this, then start fresh. I'm dropping my solo LP before the summer of 2011. I love the energy the world has been giving me over the last two years. But now it's time to focus on owning the streets again."

Nas and DJ Green Lantern released a project called the Last Real N---a Alive, Part 2 featuring vocals Nas recorded when he was making his last album, Untitled.

Nas has also been in the studio recording with the RZA, who commented on Nas’ legacy and his previous work with the Queens artist.

"Escobar is one of the best MCs to ever bless the mic," RZA said of Nas on the VMA white carpet on Sunday. "We're still trying to figure our schedule out. We both got a lot of big life ahead of us. But we're getting in. We're gonna make that classic. You know what it is. Last time, Nas did a verse for me that was on 'Verbal Intercourse.' That was a classic. To get back in and make another classic like that would be real good."
