Quadron-'Quadron'

Surprisingly, The Scandanavian soul scene is thriving right now and this is partly due to Danish ‘Electro Soul’ producing duo Quadron. Singer Coco Maja Hastrup Karshøj and multi-instrumentalist/ producer Robin Hannibal create soul-music that will excite the eardrums. Quadron have been together for a couple of years now, and their self-titled album, released late 2009 earned rave reviews.

Quadron have a contemporary approach to Soul music; simplistic, ethereal and often with influences from 70′s disco. Coco’s voice is fantastic, with a similar romantic style to Jill Scott perhaps. Her voice is soothing yet powerful, managing to be simultaneously gentle and resonating.

Their impressive variety of styles cater for a wide ranging taste. from disco-soul in Slippin’ to George Clinton-esque funk heard in the song Average Fruit. Wistful vocals flatter the ambient bassline in the track Day.

tUnE YarDs-whokill

Merrill Garbus, Tune-Yards founder and frontwoman, recorded her 2009 debut, Bird-Brains, in her bedroom with a Dictaphone. The record won acclaim for its ukulele and loop-pedal pop, and Garbus was praised for her skills as a one-woman DIY band. She'd signed with 4AD by the time she was ready to write follow-up LP, whokill, and had both a studio and band at her disposal. Lo-fi purists may have fretted over the impact of these new resources on Garbus's music (and Garbus herself admitted to a period of creative trepidation), but what emerged was a bold, colourful record – rowdy but focused, and bursting with energy.

whokill has its roots in Garbus's adoptive home of Oakland, California, charged with her own personal politics and the wider turbulence of that community's recent years, from police brutality to the fatal shooting of Oscar Grant and the riots that followed. whokill has all the impact of that first brick thrown at a windowpane, in violent protest or jubilant celebration. Its conception had a specific locale, but whokill's sweltering, shimmering mix of sirens, Mardi Gras saxophones, shattering glass, big Caribbean beats and anthem choruses heralded a year blotted with politicised unrest and worldwide protest, from Tahrir Square, to the London riots and the Occupy movement.

The album saw Garbus expanding and amplifying her raw pop vision into vibrant, rhythm-soaked compositions of melody and noise, brimming with everything from dub and folk to soca and jazz. She matched her capability for sub Saharan-style singing with huge, genre-mashing aplomb, and produced a record that set spring on fire and continued to burn bright across the rest of 2011.

Pete Philly-'One'

Lauded lyricist and hip-hop innovator Pete Philly will release his debut solo album, One on October 3rd via Anti- Records. The album is the long-awaited solo effort by Pete Philly, following the break-up with his longtime collaborator Perquisite.

From underground stardom, Pete Philly garnered wide acclaim as the vocal half of Pete Philly & Perquisite. With the duo’s debut Mindstate (2005) and sophomore album Mystery Repeats (2007), Pete Philly & Perquisite rose to the top of the European hip-hop scene. Both albums are statements of a growing European hip-hop scene which set itself apart from the lyrical machismo and musical clichés of the dominant forces in US hip-hop. Pete Philly & Perquisite’s genre-crossing approach led to both commercial success and critical acclaim: Mystery Repeats is to date the highest charting hip-hop album in their home country, and was the first ever hip-hop album to claim the highest position in the critics’ poll of acclaimed German music magazine Visions. The band shared stages with Kanye West and the late James Brown, and performed at the main European music festivals.

The Boxettes-'EP'

Hometown:
London.

The lineup: Isabel Ehresmann, Alyusha Chagrin, Yvette Riby-Williams, Neo Joshua.

The background: Yesterday's new band kind of forced themselves on us – they had to be written about because they're going to be unavoidable, and besides, they make the sort of noise (musical and lyrical) that commands attention. The Boxettes are another outfit who intruded on our field of vision and ever so impolitely demanded we look (and listen). Then again, how could we not write about an all-girl a cappella group who combine unison singing, solo vocalising and beatboxing to such breathtaking effect?

That's "breathtaking" as in: they regularly rob audiences of their breath because, as we say, all the sounds, the beats and the "instrumentation", are provided by the four girls; and "breathtaking" as in: can you imagine how much huffing and puffing is involved in creating a song from scratch using just your voice?

Alison Carney-'Alison Wonderland'

It’s been four years since Washington DC native Alison Carney released anything new, today marks the release of her new mixtape (or free LP – she doesn’t mind what you call it) alisonWonderland.

Featuring “borrowed” productions from Diplo, J.Dilla, Benzi and Flying Lotus (to name a few) as well as some original compositions the 12 tracks within are all embedded with Alison’s very clear, very clean, very cool vocals. I really enjoy her free-spirit inflections, in some ways she reminds me a little of Terri Walker and in others of Muhsinah (I hate making comparisons, but it’s true) but she remains very much her own character throughout.

Brownswood Bubblers - 'Compiled by Giles Peterson'

“Brownswood Bubblers provides a platform for unsung heroes and emerging talent from the Worldwide underground. The series distils the stream of exciting new artists that have become semi-permanent fixtures in Gilles’ playlists and DJ sets of late to create a suite of perfect bumps.”

Seven volumes deep and counting, Gilles’ journey through the worldwide underground continues. The inaugural Bubblers saw the likes of Colonel Red, Iman and the mighty Simbad cosy up to beat conducting supremos Shawn J Period, Morgan & Steve Spacek and Eric Lau. DAMN! Chapter Two uncovered the crackly genius of Flying Lotus, Jamie Woon and showcased the irrepressible IG Culture in his New Sector Movements guise, whilst the third installment highlighted the talents of Bullion, DJ Day, Stacey Epps and Emanative feat. Ahu. Last year we brought you volume four, kicking off with the honey-coated Motor City soul vibes purveyed by Mayer Hawthorne on ‘Maybe So Maybe No’ and weaving a path through to Lone’s lush, widescreen beatscape ‘Sea Spray’ via Oumou Sangaré’s soaring African melodies, Maryland beatmaker yU’s coarsely chopped hip hop soul and the rich sub low cinematics of Floating Points. Jazzanova’s Alex Barck proclaimed it simply the best Bubblers to date and the plaudits came thick and fast.

Amy Winehouse-'Lioness: Hidden Treasures'

2011 posthumous release, a collection of previously unreleased tracks, alternate versions of existing classics, as well as a couple of brand new ones. Following her tragic passing, some of the producers and musicians who worked closely with Amy Winehouse, among them Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, spent time listening over the many recordings that Amy had made, before, during, and after the release of Frank and Back To Black. It was said by all who worked with Amy that she never sang or played a song the same way twice. It quickly became apparent to Salaam and Mark that they had a collection of songs that deserved to be heard, a collection of songs that were a fitting treatment to Amy the artist and, as importantly, Amy the friend.

Tracklist:

1. 'Our Day Will Come' (reggae version)
2. 'Between the Cheats'
3. 'Tears Dry'
4. 'Wake Up Alone' (demo)
5. 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow'

8. 'The Girl from Ipanema'
9. 'Halftime'
10. 'Best Friends'
